Khmer pronouncing dictionary

The writing of a Standard Khmer pronunciation dictionary raises a number of preliminary questions: is there an acknowledged standard Khmer pronunciation? What is it like? And where does it come from? It is necessary to add that we don’t consider the concept of “standard language” in the usual meaning, namely as a set of precise normative rules. For us here “standard language” refers to the way Khmer is or should be spoken in a formal environment such as universities, schools, administration, media…
This set of questions has never been really seen as relevant and Khmer language was often seen as displaying a considerable unity in space. Such a unity could very well allow considering linguistic variation of secondary importance.
